White Lung Association Preservation Project

White Lung A Project of Langsdale Library

Baltimore laborers were not content to play a passive role when the link between asbestos exposure and deadly illnesses like mesothelioma was confirmed. In response, they formed White Lung Association (WLA), a worker-led nonprofit whose mission it was to educate the general public to the hazards of asbestos exposure. For 30 years, the WLA worked on a national level to help craft regulations and laws, train asbestos abatement professionals, help those sick with asbestos-related illnesses, and review buildings for asbestos exposure, as well as develop numerous projects and campaigns to eliminate public exposure to asbestos.

The University of Baltimore's Langsdale Library Special Collections department, which provides access to primary source materials related to the history of modern Baltimore, recently acquired the WLA's archive, which was in danger of being lost. To make the WLA's documents and materials readily accessible to researchers and the general public, the Special Collections team is asking for $20,000 to organize, appraise, and catalog documents for the final collection, house the documents and materials in the Langsdale Library, and create a collection guide for research use. Furthermore, an archival maintenance fund for the collection will be established. The goal is to have the collection available for use by fall 2017.

Will you join us in this effort to preserve information from an important Baltimore-based organization that generated public awareness and government response to a very serious health and environmental crisis? Each gift, regardless of the amount, puts us one step closer to being able to share this resource with the Baltimore and research communities. Help us preserve the White Lung Association's legacy today!
