Honor the Legacy of Johannes (Jannie) Botes

The Johannes Botes Capstone Achievement Award A Project of College of Public Affairs

The University of Baltimore community mourns the loss of our beloved and respected colleague, retired professor Johannes (Jannie) Botes. Jannie lost his two-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on January 22. His wife, Susan Hansche, says that although ALS caused his physical body to deteriorate, Jannie was always keenly aware of what was happening around him and in the world, and really missed being able to verbally communicate his thoughts and share his stories with his family and friends.

At the request of Susan and their children, Hannah and Noah, the University of Baltimore College of Public Affairs is honored to memorialize Jannie through the establishment of The Johannes Botes Capstone Achievement Award in Negotiations and Conflict Management. The Johannes Botes Capstone Achievement Award will recognize one student annually for excellence in the Capstone Project, the final thesis project in the program.

Your gift of remembrance, when combined with gifts from other family members, friends, and colleagues, will provide the Negotiations and Conflict Management Program with the resources to honor Jannie's memory and his work by recognizing excellence in student achievement through a monetary award. Looking forward, it is the desire of Jannie's family and UB's College of Public Affairs to bring The Johannes Botes Capstone Achievement Award to $20,000, which will fully endow the fund for an annual award.

Thank you for your remembrance of Jannie through a thoughtful gift to The Johannes Botes Capstone Achievement Award. Your generosity is appreciated by his family, the UB community, and the students who will receive the Award in Jannie's name. (If you prefer to make your memorial gift by check, please make the check out to the "University of Baltimore Foundation" and either write in the memo field "In memory of Johannes Botes" or include that information in an accompanying note. Checks can be mailed to: University of Baltimore Foundation, c/o Office of Annual Giving and Special Gifts, 1130 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Please call 410.837.6135 with any questions.)

(Jannie continued his work after he retired from UB. He penned "Reflections on my Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship in South Africa" in late 2015. He also recently collaborated with George Mason University Professor Emeritus Christopher Mitchell on a project called "Parents of the Field," a series of interviews with the scholars and practitioners who initiated the field of peace and conflict research in the 1950s and 1960s.)
